BOWDEN, Matthew. Surgeon

Arrived per "Ocean" in 1803 as a civil assistant surgeon for the settlement at Port Phillip; transferred to Hobart in February 1804 and was appointed First Assistant Surgeon in April 1810 and Principal Surgeon following the death of J'Anson in November 1811; he died suddenly in October 1814.

Arrived per "General Garnham" in 1812; he was a founder of the Methodist Church in Australia and helped form and administer the Philanthropic Society, Sunday School Institute and Bible Society, 1814-16; he was the master of the Male Orphan School from January 1819 to March 1825 and a landholder at Kissing Point.
