Until being appointed Naval Officer, Hobart Town, in 1814 Gordon was a Clerk with Thomas Campbell & Co and pursued his own interests in Sydney; resigned as Naval Officer in 1815 to pursue agriculture at his grant at Sorrell; became Treasurer of the Police Fund, magistrate and a Justice of the Peace, but his main successes were in the growing of crops and sheep.
