Arrived on the "Lady Penrhyn" with the Marine detachment of the First Fleet; when Marines relieved in 1790, he was chosen by Phillip to raise a company that would be annexed to the New South Wales Corps; served as commanding officer of the Corps during the absence from Sydney of Lieutenant Colonel Paterson; assumed Lieutenant Governorship on 26 January 1808 and arrested Governor Bligh; administered the colony until 28 July 1808; cashiered 1811; settler, 30 May 1813-; resident at Annandale Farm at Petersham; properties at Bankstown, Cabramatta and near Lake Illawarra; died 5 January 1823.
