KING, Phillip Parker. Born on Norfolk Island; son of Philip Gidley and Anna Josepha King

Left for England per "Britannia", 1796; joining the Navy in 1807, becoming a lieutenant in 1814; appointed by British Government to survey parts of Australian coast not surveyed by Captain Flinders; conducted four major surveys between December 1817 and April 1822, the first three in the "Mermaid", the last in the "Bathurst"; promoted to rank of commander in July 1821 returning to England in April 1823; granted land at South Creek (1806) and Rooty Hill (1822); in 1824 became a shareholder in the Australian Agricultural Company.
