TOWNSON, John. Military officer; landholder

Arrived per "Scarborough", 1790 as a lieutenant in the New South Wales Corps; went to Norfolk Island in 1791; promoted to captain in May 1795; he was Acting Lieutenant-Governor of Norfolk Island from September 1796 to November 1799; returned to England in 1800, sold his commission in July 1803 and came back to the Colony in August 1806; he moved to Van Diemen's Land c.1812; he held land in Bexley and Hurstville districts, and at Kelso in Van Diemen's Land.
