Came free per "Neptune", 1790 as Assistant Surgeon; sailed on 1 August 1790 per "Surprize" to Norfolk Island to take up appointment as assistant in the hospital; appointed Superintendent of Convicts at Norfolk Island from 10 September 1791; returned to Sydney in February 1796 & appointed assistant surgeon from 7 April; appointed Principal Surgeon in February 1809, which was approved in July 1811 (to c.October 1819); appointed magistrate in May 1810, sitting on the Governor's court & acting as chief police magistrate in Sydney; Superintendent of Police from December 1810 (to c.April 1820, & 1821 to 1825); one of the first commissioners of the turnpike road to Parramatta [1810]; Treasurer of the Police Fund (to c.June 1820); one of the founders of the Bank of New South Wales, 1817, as well as director & shareholder; with Alexander Riley & Garnham Blaxcell, one of the contractors for the General Hospital.
