WHITE, John. Naval Surgeon & amateur naturalist; arrived in the First Fleet

In 1786 White was appointed Chief Surgeon of the expedition to establish a convict settlement at Botany Bay; after his arrival in New South Wales he accompanied Phillip on two journeys of exploration & helped in the erection of the signal station at South Head; he sailed for England in December 1794 & resigned his appointment as Principal Surgeon in August 1796.
