CAMPBELL, John Thomas. Secretary to Governor Macquarie; Provost Marshal

John Thomas Campbell was recommended to Macquarie by the Earl of Caledon, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, when he called there on his way to New South Wales in 1809; and Campbell joined Macquarie's party. He was appointed Secretary to the Governor on 1 January 1810 and held this post until 21 January 1821. He received a number of additional appointments: Registrar of the Court of Vice Admiralty, 11 June 1810; Trustee and Agent for Intestate Estates, 22 June 1811; Secretary and Treasurer of Committee of Native Institution, 10 December 1814; as a Justice of the Peace and Magistrate, 25 October 1815; to the Committees of the Male and Female Orphan Institutions, 1818; Provost Marshal, 6 March 1819-1824; and Sheriff briefly in 1824. He was also the first President of the Board of Directors of the Bank of New South Wales, 1817-21, and held land at Bringelly and near Rooty Hill. He died at Sydney on 7 January 1830.

As Secretary to the Governor, Campbell was Macquarie's chief assistant in the administration of the colony. It was thought impractical to index under his name all the various applications, reports and petitions addressed to him as Secretary or on which he took some action - they are indexed under the various other persons/subjects involved. Entries have been made, however, for papers relating to selected major matters he was concerned with as Secretary; to his salary, accommodation, land grants and other personal matters; to the administration of the Secretary's office; and to correspondence received in his other capacities, in particular as Provost Marshal.
