COLLINS, David (Colonel). Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land

David Collins (1756-1810) arrived on the "Sirius" at Botany Bay on 20 January 1788 having been appointed Deputy Judge Advocate of the new colony by a commission dated 24 October 1786. He also served as Secretary to the Governor from June 1788 to August 1796. He sailed on the "Britannia" on leave in August 1796. On 4 January 1803 he was commissioned Lieutenant Governor of a new settlement in Bass Strait and sailed in April 1803 on the "Calcutta", arriving at Port Phillip Bay on 9 October. The area was not encouraging so it was decided to move the settlement to the Derwent where Lieutenant Bowen had already established a settlement at Risdon. He arrived there on 16 February 1804 and finally chose Sullivan Cove as the site for Hobart Town. He died on 24 March 1810.
