HARRIS, George Prideaux. Deputy Surveyor and Commissary, Hobart

Appointed deputy surveyor for David Collins' settlement at Port Phillip in 1803 and moved with Collins to the Derwent in February 1804; he was appointed a magistrate in June 1804, received a grant of 100 acres at Sandy Bay in January 1806 and was appointed Collector of Quit Rents later that year; in 1808 he surveyed the boundary between the northern and southern parts of the island; he was Deputy Commissary from August 1809 to June 1810; he died in October 1810.

HARRIS, John. Surgeon and landholder

Arrived per "Surprise" in 1790 as a surgeon's mate in the New South Wales Corps; he received a grant at Parramatta in 1793 and 1798 built Experimental Farm Cottage on James Ruse's farm which he had purchased; he was appointed magistrate in 1800, placed in charge of the Police establishment and in 1801 became Naval Officer; he was dismissed from public office on a number of occasions but was generally reinstated; in 1809 he travelled to England to give evidence at Major Johnston's Court Martial and returned to the Colony per "General Hewitt" as a private settler in 1814; he became a director of the Bank of New South Wales in 1817 and was involved with a number of committees; he was surgeon on Oxley's expedition to Bathurst in 1819 and was appointed a magistrate again in the same year.
