LARRA, James. Per "Scarborough", 1790

Jewish emancipist and merchant, he received his first grant in 1797 and free pardon in 1800. In 1797 he was granted one of the Colony's first liquor licences and built the Freemason's Arms in Parramatta becoming, in the next 15 years, the most successful businessman in Parramatta. After 1814 his fortunes declined and by 1822 was in debtors' prison.
