LORD, Edward. Lieutenant of Marines; merchant and pastoralist | |
Lord was a member of the first party to establish a settlement on the Derwent in Van Diemen's Land and in 1804 built the first private house in Hobart Town. By 1809 he had substantial grants, was a magistrate and was appointed Naval Officer and inspector of public works. On failing to be made Lieutenant Governor after Collins he resigned from the Marines and concentrated on trading. By 1820 he was said to be the richest man in Van Diemen's Land; he was the first president of the Van Diemen's Land Agricultural Society and first proprietor of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land. He returned to England in 1828 leaving a manager to look after his vast estates. | |
