OXLEY, John. Surveyor General and explorer

Arrived 1802 as master's mate on "Buffalo" and engaged in coastal survey work; returned to England 1807 and 1809 and retired from Navy in 1811; returned to Sydney per "Minstrel" 1812 to take up duties as Surveyor General; 1817-18 explored the Lachlan and Macquarie Rivers, discovering the Castlereagh, Peel and Hastings Rivers and naming Port Macquarie; surveyed Port Macquarie 1820 and found it favourable for a penal settlement; explored Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River 1823. Oxley was also one of the original members of the Legislative Council, Agricultural Society and Philosophical Society and held land at Camden, Minto, Appin and Bowral.
