RAINE, John. Merchant; brother of Thomas Raine

Arrived in Hobart in November 1819 on the "Regalia", later moving to Sydney; travelled to England in 1821 with sea-elephant oil from Macquarie Island and wool from Van Diemen's Land, returning to Sydney on the "Thalia" in 1823; settled in New South Wales making frequent visits to Van Diemen's Land where he had land; built a steam flour mill at Parramatta which he ran in conjunction with a bakery, general store and stage coach service to Sydney.

Made several voyages to New South Wales in the "Surrey" between 1814 and 1823; engaged in a variety of mercantile enterprises, such as establishing the first shore whaling station at Twofold Bay in 1818; in 1822 founded in partnership with David Ramsay the Sydney firm of Raine & Ramsay, general merchants, shipowners and agents; director of the Sydney and Van Diemen's Land Packet Co and of the Bank of New South Wales.
