DARLING, Ralph (Lieutenant General). Governor of New South Wales

Sir Ralph Darling (1775-1858) was appointed Governor of New South Wales and its island dependencies in 1824. He sailed on the "Catherine Stewart Forbes" and in November 1825 arrived in Hobart Town where he proclaimed the separate Government of Van Diemen's Land. In London he had received two commissions, one as Governor of New South Wales, the other as Governor of Van Diemen's Land. The latter territory was to be administered by a lieutenant-governor in his absence. He reached Sydney on 17 December 1825, assumed office on 19 December and served until 21 October 1831. He sailed on the "Hooghly" on 22 October.
